Tooth loss isn’t the end of a beautiful smile. Dental Implants can help.
Finding out that you need to have a permanent tooth extracted due to damage, decay or an infection can be disheartening. What now? How do you replace a missing tooth? Our South San Jose and West San Jose, CA, dentists Dr. Deepak Shetty and Dr. Kavita Bhatia are here to tell you about a wonderful restoration that could give you back your smile and your confidence for the long run.
We know most people want dental restorations that will last, and implants are built to last the rest of your life if you care for them properly and maintain good oral hygiene. An implant only looks like a small metal screw or post, but it has so much to offer. In fact, this is the only tooth replacement that is designed to take the place of your missing tooth’s roots.
In order for the implant to replace the tooth’s roots, our San Jose dentist will need to make a small hole into the jawbone where the implant will go. Even though implants are small they are extremely resilient and made from tough titanium, which is also biocompatible. Since it’s biocompatible this means that the jawbone and tissue will treat the implant like a natural part of the body, fusing together with the implant over the course of several months to become one.
Once the bone and implant have fused together (this naturally occurring process is known as osseointegration) the next step is to place an abutment over the top of the implant. In order to do this, we will need to open up the gums to reveal the implant. From there, the abutment will be placed and the mouth will be given a few more weeks to heal before placing the dental crown.
Of course, some implants already have a built-in abutment, in which case you won’t need to come in for a separate procedure to place the abutment. This is something our San Jose, CA, restorative dentist can discuss with you during your consultation.
Dental implants are unique from other tooth replacement options because they:
- Are designed to last the rest of your life
- Function like real teeth
- Completely restore function and chewing
- Preserve the jawbone and prevent bone loss
- Protect the face’s natural shape and structure
- Prevent teeth from shifting into the open gap
